Fish Pendant
A souvenir from China, this exquisite little fish is machine embroidered with hand-knotted attachments above and below its body. It embodies much that is associated with China, including the use of red, a symbolically significant colour to Chinese people, and an often unacknowledged sense of humour and whimsy. The little fish has possibly escaped the hook hanging below it.

Alligator
The alligator is Florida's most famous animal. Spanish settlers named it "el lagarto", meaning "the lizard". The Florida alligator is an ancient reptile that is only found in the Southeastern United States, from Texas to as far north as North
Carolina. This image of Florida’s iconic animal, cut from a thin slice of wood, is a memento from St. Augustine.

Caribbean Doll
Soft sculpture head and torso is supported by a straw base. She wears a red head scarf and her dress bears the names of many of the islands in the Caribbean. Her apron is embroidered with “Antigua” so perhaps that is where she was purchased. Eyes and mouth are painted. Artifact is culturally loaded with colonial implications. Images printed on the dress fabric show mountain and sea, fish,
coffee berries, and a cockfight. Some machine sewing and pinking of edges.
